The problem with America
Many
of you who are reading this are probably familiar with the
government bailout of GM a few years back.
What you may not have heard
about this is that the President proposed, as a condition of the
bailout limited salaries of the CEO of GM, and several other large
companies which were to receive bailout money to $500,000/year
(source New York Times). The
cap that was later increased by a substantial amount. I am sure that
many of the people reading feel this salary cap was a good idea. As
you would expect, GM feels very differently about the matter.
According to the HuffingtonPost, the CEO of GM was paid $7.7
million in 2011. You are probably
thinking that this is a ridiculous amount
of money, but apparently GM didn’t feel it was enough as the company
wanted to pay their CEO more money,
but couldn’t due government
regulations. As you may have guessed, GM Corporation did not like
this a bit. Being in America, they had to cry about it like a little
bitches, and get what they want. GM argued that the salary limits
were limiting their “ability to compete for good talent”.
Seriously! That is just
plain ridiculous. Being an awarding winning actors/actress or pro
athlete takes talent. Being a top executive does not take talent,
business knowledge maybe but, even that is debatable when so many
companies go belly up and usually shit can their CEO. They also
stated that their CEO’s salary was less than that of CEO’s at
comparable companies.
What leads me to question whether or not GM actually needed
the bailout money, is the fact that, they flew private jets to
Washington to beg for their taxpayer bailout. That’s like driving a
brand new Cadillac to your local welfare office to apply for food
stamps. If you attempted this, you would of course get denied or
possibly thrown in jail for attempted fraud. (This may be an
exaggeration but you get the picture). I really feel like they could
have at least downgraded to a limo or something, but this is America
we are talking about, and corporate executives are apparently too
good for that. Corporate
executives can get away with stuff like this all the time. Let’s
face it, this is America, and they are allowed to get a way with
whatever the hell they want. If its one thing that American’s know,
it’s that anything is ok when you are wearing a suit. The sad thing
is, this is only one example of corruption that is destroying our
country. If you want to read more about this, you can check out the
full articles of my sources at the bottom of the page.
I believe that a lot of the problems with the U.S. economy
stem from the fact, that many of the top executives in the country
make absorbent salaries. I have nothing against people making decent
salaries. It’s not so much the salaries of the tops executives, but
how they make their money. These are the people that you may often
hear referred to as the top 1%, or the one percenter’s. You might be
thinking that it shouldn’t matter how they make their money, but it
matters to me and a lot of other Americans.
When absorbent salaries are
made by paying the people at the bottom of the ladder in their
company next to nothing, using deceptive business practices, and
ripping off their customers it just causes economic problems. I have
nothing against doctor’s lawyers or people of other similar
occupations making several hundred thousand dollars a year.
Statistically people like this may be considered the top 1% wage
earners; however I do not consider them ‘one percenters’. I wouldn’t
even have anything against corporate executives making millions of
dollars a year if they could, if they could do it while paying
employees at the bottom a decent wage and using honest business
practices. More often
than not, this isn’t the case.
Cooperate execs would like to have the American public
believe that mega retailers like Kmart, Target and others cannot
afford to pay more than minimum wage.
I do not believe this for a minute. Especially; when some of them,
like the family which owns Wal-Mart are worth billions. In
Wal-Mart’s defense there has been mention in the news media somewhat
recently about their plans to increase the wages of their lowest
paying employees a significant amount. It would really be great if a
lot of the other mega retailers in the country would follow suit.
Just like retailers,
factories also have to be competitive, I believe more so than
retailers, as they have to compete with factories in china.
Retailers shop around for price far more often than a consumer does
making factories even more competitive. That being that case you
would think that factories would be the ones paying minimum wage but, the
fact is that factory jobs are the only class of non-skilled jobs in
America that generally pay decent wages.
This makes as much sense as
wiping your butt before you poop.
This is the problem with America; we live in a country that
is run not by the President, Congress or the American people, but by
the dollar bill. Most people do not realize the people we call
lobbyist are actually spokespeople for the cupidity of corporate
America. It is all about the money.
Is this what we have become, a country run by a green piece
of paper, with a picture a dead President on it?
